Born October 16, 1936, Cam came to Canada in 1956 to study nursing. She graduated from Toronto General Hospital in 1959 as a Registered Nurse, continuing her education throughout her life; receiving a Bachelor of Science of Nursing from the University of Western Ontario (1965) and Master of Public Administration from Queen's University (1992).
Cam worked as a nurse in the Northwest Territories in the 1960s, and then as a Public Health Nurse in London, Ontario. She moved to Kingston, Ontario in 1975 to take up a position at St. Lawrence College as a Nursing Professor; a position she retained until her retirement in 1998.
A founding member of the Ontario Nurses Association (ONA) and past president of the Kingston Chapter of the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO), in her role as nursing professor Cam was a strong supporter of and mentor to those in the nursing and teaching communities; providing advice, guidance and support to colleagues and students.
An avid outdoors person, Cam was a member of the Rideau Trail Association for 25 years, including serving on the Kingston regional executive as Membership Director, Treasurer, and Secretary. She also hiked in Frontenac Park, completing the Frontenac Challenge more than 5 times and earning a permanent plaque in the Park's visitor center. She was also an active member of the Cataraqui Canoe Club.
While in her 70's, Cam traveled to Spain to hike 800km of the Camino de Santiago pilgrim trail. This was only one of her many travels from an early age to later life, that included Egypt, Europe, Russia, and Texas, as well as most of Canada.
In retirement Cam volunteered at Martha's Table and the Kingston Seniors' Center.
Cam is survived by her son Patrick James Clement Hodges and daughter in law Lori (Streefkerk), as well as brothers, sisters, family and friends in Barbados and Canada, and a cherished group of friends in Kingston.
A celebration of Cam's life will be held at Wartman Funeral Home, 980 Collins Bay Road, Kingston, on Saturday, October 13, 2018; between 3:00 and 5:00 PM.
