According to Dick Tindal: Jean was one of three support staff who retired from Kingston Campus in the latter part of 1995 – front line workers whom I regarded as the “unsung heroes” of the college. Their largely unheralded departure prompted me to develop what became the Wall of Appreciation that opened in 1997. From the Memory Book that I compiled back then I am pleased to share the following observations about Jean.
For most of her 20 years at SLC (1975 to 1995), Jean worked as a receptionist in the Campus Health Centre, providing an ever warm and friendly face to two decades of students. She was affectionately known as “Cookie Monster,” because of the home-baked cookies she so often provided.
Jean is fondly remembered as one who made a difference because of her friendly and caring manner. Typical of her dedication to students was the time Jean had a tearful visitor just before Christmas. The student wanted to make a surprise visit to her Dad, who lived out province and was very ill, but didn’t have enough money for the trip home. Jean’s response was to give the student the shortfall and she was rewarded by not only repayment of the loan but a very happy student who returned that January.
