Who was the larger than life personality who once dropped a lit cigarette in the waste basket while teaching a class and then used a foot to stomp out the fire? [No, it wasn’t Paul McLaughlin; I could imagine him doing that, but we’ve already covered him in Scenario #1]

And we have a winner. The one and only Luella. I hope folks will add some comments/stories about the colourful character that she was.

Luella was a force of nature. When roused to anger at some stupidity (which happened often), she could be quite formidable. I can think of no better description than that provided by Jean Pearson on the occasion of Luella's retirement, as quoted in the 50th anniversary Book of Memories: “On more than one occasion, her voice resounded in the corridors of the old Leeds Building, sending the shivers up your spine and setting your knees to shakin’. Doors would rattle, the sun would disappear behind a cloud, and golf balls in the nearby ranges would roll into sandtraps.”

Bob Boal loved having Luella 'shape up' some of the more obstreperous students....one of her common practices was to walk down the aisle, brick ( and cigarette) in hand, threatening to reshape the guy's face. Hardly politically correct, but effective for several reasons - one being that they were overwhelmed by her vocabulary, another being that they recognized a character - and enjoyed the novelty.
