Ryandale Shelter
Ryandale Shelter was first started as a temporary emergency men’s shelter more than 30 years ago. Over the years its shelter operations expanded to include men, families and people with mental or physical issues and Ryandale opened the first long term facility in Kingston for men attempting to make the transition from homelessness to a more sustainable life style.
The shelter closed 2 years ago as part of the City of Kingston’s 10 year homeless policy, but the transition house continues to support men recovering from addictions or recently released from a Corrections institution.
I have been involved for 25 years and have found being on the Board of Directors with some truly amazing people or speaking with the residents a very rewarding experience. The Board is currently working through a process prior to hopefully expanding its operations to open a 2nd transition house.
The most pressing problem Ryandale faces currently is operating with a small Board of Directors. We are hoping that others in the community might be interested in helping Ryandale continue to continue its work.
To work with the residents of the transition house is sometimes like watching a student with that “aha” moment, and to watch these men grow to believe in themselves and discover the strength to move on from the transition house to their own place, or reconnect with family is a wonderful thing to watch .
