Two of our artistic Association members have their works on display in Kingston these days in two events.
The first is the Annual Juried Exhibition of the Kingston Photographic Club at the Window Art Gallery, which ends on Saturday April 29. The show is focused on the theme of “Street Photography.” Each member got to submit three photos to be “juried,” which meant one would be selected for the show. There are nearly 30 images in the show, one of them from David Craig. This exhibit is at the Window Art Gallery, 647 Princess Street, phone 613-549-1528. The second event is a collage and photo show focused solely on the works of Barb Carr and David. It is on display at the Golden Rooster Deli in downtown Kingston and will be there for at least a couple weeks. The Deli is at 111 Princess Street, phone 613-549-6540. Thirty retirees came to the coffee gathering this past Tuesday and all seemed to enjoy the get together. There were some minor issues such as: folks not reading my emails and arriving for a 10:00 function that actually started at 10:30, and at least three retirees who went to the wrong building (next door) because we had been there once last year. [At our age, we are allowed to have seniors' moments.] In addition, I had trouble getting folks out the door so we could head off to an executive committee meeting at noon, but I regard that as a very nice problem, signifying how much members were enjoying the socializing. See more photos below. The College is inviting all Alumni for a day of celebrations on all three campuses. For details, go to http://www.stlawrencecollege.ca/give/alumni-friends/alumni-home/alumni-50/ and links to register for events. The SLC Retirees Association will be hosting three events for retirees and other past employees of the college in conjunction with the Kingston Campus Alumni Day on June 24. Details follow, along with a link to register for any or all of these events. Progress remains slow on specific SLC events for celebrating the 50th anniversary of the college system. Our Retirees Association now has a representative on the college's planning committee - Steve Graves, one of the originals from 1967 - and we are encouraged by this development.
The college now has a website (http://www.stlawrencecollege.ca/news/2016/colleges-turn-50/) but it doesn't yet have much information. It directs you to an anniversary website for the college system (www.amazing50.ca) which should be checked regularly for college events. At the moment, it lists numerous events from Durham College, but nothing from St. Lawrence. We do know, however, that there will be an Alumni Picnic in Kingston on June 24 (sponsored by the Alumni Foundation) and your Association is planning to host a companion event on this date. Please mark this date on your calendar, tell all former SLC employees that you know, and stay tuned for further details. We are pleased to share with you information from Brigantine Inc., which operates the St. Lawrence II youth sailing training ship. Plans are underway for the summer programs for those 13 to 18 years old. While some of us still act like teenagers at times, we do not qualify, but you may wish to share this information with grandkids or friends with teenagers. You can get details about the Brigantine and also information on registering for these youth sailing programs by going to www.brigantine.ca, the source of the accompanying photo. Barb Carr is hoping that folks will come to the Window Art Gallery to see an exhibition (and sale) of her recent monoprints, along with prints, photos, and mixed media pieces by Jane Hamilton-Khaan. Monoprints are created by printing several layers on top of one another and these pieces depict the Ontario landscape. There is a reception on January 15, from 3 to 5, but you are welcome to drop in anytime. For Gallery hours and a preview of some of the pieces on display go to the Window Art Gallery website. The annual conference of CURAC (the Colleges and Universities Retirees Associations of Canada) will be held at Carleton University in Ottawa, from May 24-26, 2017. It will be hosted by the Carleton University Retirees Association and folks are being encouraged to come to Ottawa next year for Canada’s 150th anniversary and for the 75th anniversary of Carleton University. (The notice from CURAC fails to mention that next year is also the 50th anniversary of the Ontario community colleges but we must try to overlook this regrettable oversight in the spirit of post-secondary camaraderie).
It turns out that Ian Wilson is not the only fundraiser extraordinaire. He has raised funds for various organizations in the Kingston area and recently spearheaded a successful drive to raise $50,000 for student bursaries in time for the 50th anniversary of SLC in 2017. A recent report in the Globe and Mail offers well deserved praise for David Enns and a group of retired Cornwall faculty members. Over the past 18 years, David and his wife Sandy have hosted an annual fundraising event at their home in support of a Retired Business Faculty Award. So far the fundraising has provided 21 bursaries at $1,000 each and has built up $55,000 in a growing fund as well. Great work on the part of these retired colleagues. Whether or not it is only a coincidence that both of these excellent fundraisers were Professors of Economics is a subject for further research - if your faithful scribe is successful in his application for funding from the Canadian Research Council. |
