For those who were not at the AGM on May 18, this is a short summary of some items that were discussed. [This summary may also be helpful for those who were there but have already forgotten what was said!] The photos below (and on the opening screen of our site) are to demonstrate that a meeting was held and – perhaps to your surprise – that those in attendance seemed to be enjoying themselves.
Upcoming Social Activities
Attendees were interested in further coffee gatherings (including gatherings again at 1066 King Street West, site of our April 20 coffee event) and in a lunch or two again at the Cataraqui Golf Club (such as were held in July and November last year). In addition, we will have our usual 19th hole social in conjunction with the annual Golf Tournament at The Landings – which will be on September 6th this year. A tentative schedule of events might look something like this:
Early to mid-July Lunch at the Cataraqui Golf Club
September 6 19th hole social at The Landings around 4 p.m.
Mid-October Coffee and Conversation at 1066 King West
Mid-November Lunch at the Cataraqui Golf Club
I am providing this rather general schedule now so that you can see what the Association is planning for the remainder of this year – and so that you can offer comments and suggestions with respect to these plans.
I should also mention that some folks at the AGM suggested other possible activities for our Association, including bus trips to events such as the Brockville Theatre and Fort Henry, tours of Kingston City Hall, walking tour of Barriefield, and a tour of Bill Kirby’s apiary. That last suggestion caused a noticeable buzz in the room. [Sorry about that. Sometimes I can’t help myself.] As your overworked and underpaid social convenor, I indicated that I am happy to publicize all social events but that any of these possible new initiatives would have to be organized by those who are proposing them.
Bring Along a Retiree
We would welcome your help in recruiting new members and in getting existing members to come out to our events. You are all encouraged to reach out to any in your circle who are former employees of St. Lawrence, and encourage them to come along to one of our social events with you. Some who have been hesitant to get involved may be more likely to give it a try if invited personally and made aware that someone they know will be there. It was also suggested that some folks might need a ride, so please consider offering to pick up someone if that will help get them out. Ruth Tracy has offered to provide this service and other volunteers are welcomed and can sign up by sending a short email to [email protected].
How Will We Celebrate in 2017?
Next year the community college system will be 50 years old. While your Association’s plans may change when St. Lawrence announces its activities for next year’s anniversary, at this point we plan to sponsor an event for former employees of SLC that will probably take the form of a Hospitality Room, where those who return to Kingston would be welcomed by members of our Association. Copies of the Book of Memories would be available, along with a DVD of the Wall of Appreciation ceremonies from 1997. In addition, we hope to tables displaying college memorabilia. Other suggestions are most welcome, as are volunteers to help us organize whatever we do next year.
At the moment, we are inclined to host our Hospitality event following next year’s AGM, so that members of our Association can stay after the AGM lunch and mingle with returning college retirees during the afternoon. That would suggest a combined event around mid-May 2017, so please don’t schedule your African Safari at that time.
Pictorial Evidence
Photo on left shows Mike and Trevor obviously enjoying something being said from the podium. In the photo on the right, David looks far too happy, while Bill is wondering if he really wants to have a bunch of retirees on a tour upsetting his bees.
