Recent changes to provincial legislation have a significant impact on the role of an executor and the handling of an estate. In particular, the Minister of Finance can audit an estate for up to four years after the probate fee is paid. If it is determined that an executor has under-valued the estate, that person is responsible for paying the additional probate fee that would apply (to the higher value). As a result, an executor will now have to wait for a full four years before fully distributing the estate. In addition, executors will doubtless feel the need to spend more time ensuring that all assets are documented and properly valued. They have to be very careful when reporting the value of assets because they are personally at risk if the information is wrongly reported.
Thanks to Barb Carr for providing information on the Thousand Islands Fine Arts Association annual exhibition. It is being held at the Parks Canada site at Mallorytown Landing, east of Gananoque on the Thousand Islands Parkway, beginning this weekend. It is a bit late to tell you about this afternoon’s reception (between 1 and 3), unless you are reading this as soon as I post it. But the event continues for the following two Saturdays and Sundays, from 10 until 5 – and Barb will be there on Saturday September 26 from 10 until 1:30, showing pieces from a wonderful printmaking session in Ireland this past June. See the exhibition poster below.
Thanks to Vicki Ruthven, I am happy to provide below a notice of an upcoming fund-raising dinner in Kingston in support of Syrian refugees.
Since 3 year old Alan Kurdi’s body washed ashore in Turkey, many have felt incensed and have demanded a response from their governments. But there is much that can be done by individuals as well. There is a church-based community group that has already sponsored one Syrian family and brought it to Kingston. You can find out more about it, and whether you might wish to make a donation in support of Syrian refugees, by going to http://interchurchrefugeepartnership.com/.
