Linda Choptiany, President of OCRA, forwarded to our Association the article below, published April 25 in Benefits Canada. The generally positive report on the financial health of our pension plan is moderately encouraging. If I (your humble scribe) remember correctly, there is a two step process that could be triggered if the plan sufficiently improves its funding base and reserves. (1) The increased contribution levels imposed on existing employees back when the plan was in financial difficulty, will be reduced again. (2) If the funding picture improves further, the pension indexing for the years of service prior to 1992 might be reinstated, on an optional basis, from year to year. I must emphasize that this is a long shot, and years away at best, but at least the plan seems to be doing reasonably well at the moment. See below.

Some 35 members of the SLC Retirees Association attended the spring Coffee and Conversation event on April 20. The new venue – the first floor lounge in the high rise apartment building whose tenants include retirees Marg Matheson and Dick Tindal – was very well received. As usual, folks starting chatting happily as soon as they arrived (as will be evident from the photos below). But I’d like to offer thanks to those who contributed to the success of this event with “behind the scenes” efforts before and after the gathering. In particular, a big thank you to: (1) Ruth and Clare, who baked enough cookies and cake to fee the entire apartment building, (2) Anne, who delivered the boxes of coffee and Timbits from Tim Horton’s, and (3) Marg, who came down to the lounge early to help get things set up and who stayed to tidy up and put everything back in place. Thanks also to any others that I have inadvertently overlooked. We hope to have several more social gatherings in 2016, since they are always well attended and much enjoyed.
We've discussed this issue in some earlier postings. Legislative changes have imposed additional burdens on those who are executors of an estate. The item below is from the April 2016 legal column in Vista, a publication of the Seniors Association Kingston Region. The scan has been split into two sections to create a larger display for reading.
Thanks to David Craig for sharing information about a musical concert, to be held at the Old Church Theatre, 940 Bonisteel Road, in Trenton on April 17 at 2 pm and 7 pm.
The continuing popularity of Donald Trump is a source of much puzzlement and considerable anxiety. My latest blog post is a serious attempt to explain the Trump phenomenon. For a lighter look at this issue and its impact, read on for the story about the fence being built by Canada to keep out Americans flooding north.
